Molotov prepara bomba

The Billboard Latin Music Awards honor the most popular albums, songs, and performers in Latin music, as determined by the actual sales and radio airplay data that informs Billboard's weekly charts during a one-year period from the issue dated February 9, 2008 through this year's January 31, 2009 issue. Finalists, and the eventual winners, reflect performance of new recordings on Billboard's sales charts, including Top Latin Albums, and radio charts, including Hot Latin Songs, with album categories confined to titles that did not appear before Nov. 10, 2007 issue but excluding finalists from the prior-year's Billboard Latin Music Awards. Based on sales data compiled by Nielsen SoundScan and radio information monitored by Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, Billboard's charts are the world's most authoritative music charts.

Ximena Sariñana shines at 9:30 Club

If you missed Ximena Sariñana's concert at the 9:30 club this past Tuesday, April 21st, 2009, you may have missed a rare opportunity to see a new artist before the so called "blow up". Just to get an idea her next gig is heading to Miami today to attend the Latin Billboard awards where her debut album "Mediocre" is nominated in the Latin Rock/Alternative Album of the Year category.

Sharing her nomination are Mana and Julieta Venegas who are both giants in the latin rock scene and fill up DC's largest venues in the blink of an eye. Julieta Venega's last performance in DC at the Kennedy Center resulted in full capacity 3,000 people and scores more that were forced to watch the show on large screens in the hallways of the legendary music hall.

Without a doubt Ximena's performance this past Tuesday showed off her musical ability (that outshines some of the major talents in the music scene nowadays) and for those listening to her for the first time created an immediate fanbase. Her music, voice, and new album proved to be extremely popular amongst those in attendance of which most seemed to know Ximena from her early acting and musical beginnings.

She was intent on sharing her music with a new audience and even performed two songs in english (none of which are in her album) so that "those who don't speak spanish can still learn what I'm about".

Ximena came off as very genuine and wise soul (at her young 23 years) and was intent on connecting with and pleasing the audience who called out to her between songs and asked for two encores.
I personally enjoyed the version of "Las Huellas", a song she wrote when she was still acting in the movie "Amarte Duele" which features a great soundtrack including Natalia LaFourcade, Zoe, Kinky, Elefante, Volovan and others.

Overall a great show! For those of you who missed it, hope you can catch tickets to the next one!

BajoFondo has the recipe for Sold Out show at 9:30 Club

That's right people do the math, Argentinian/Uruguayan musicians + an entrancing mix of Tango+Electronica+Trip Hop+Instrumental music with other latin sounds + Funky background graphics = the recipe for a sold out BajoFondo show at the 9:30 club this past Saturday, April 11th.  We arrived early as the show was set to start at the sound check hour of 7:45pm with Natalia Clavier (an Argentinian transplant to DC who was in charge of opening up the show).  I was greeted with a loooong line at the 9:30 Club ticket booth and with nervous faces of people asking in a loud voice "alguien tiene extra tickets?".  I looked at the line and the large sign at the box office, "Tonight's show is completely Sold Out" (Is it me or does the word "completely sold out" stick the knife deeper for those without tickets? As if saying, "you should have completely gotten the tickets ahead of time dufus".  I dunno I think a simple "Sold Out" sign does the trick?)  Anyway I digress, I'm in line and I can already hear the sounds of Natalia Clavier's band.. I'm thinking shoot I should have left the get-to-together at my friends house sooner...I really wanted to see her full show...bummer.  We finally get our tickets and get into the show... the crowd is mixed with young and old, latinos and adopted non-latinos, and unfortunately the place is only half full.   I guess you can blame the stereotype that Latinos are fashionably late for that? Hmmmm... fortunately, the crowd does get there in time for BajoFondo, in time to see the smoke machine starting to work.. the lights dim.. the background screen coming down and the band coming out on stage looking sharp all dressed in black.  If the upright bass, the bandoneon(the accordian looking instrument that gives Tango its definitive sound), the keyboard and electric guitars, paired with a mac laptop don't give you the idea that this will be an interesting show I don't know what will!

The crowd was littered with the Argentinian flag and fans who cheered at the band members by name.  The music started and it was like a shock of electricity went through the crowd.  They started jumping and cheering in unison.  They didn't seem to mind that there were no lyrics and minimal singing on any of the songs (this is different from the MarDulce CD tracks which have several guest stars as mentioned in the previous BajoFondo blog) (okay I'll save you a short scroll down.. these include Julieta Venegas, Elvis Costello, Gustavo Cerati, Nelly Furtado and more...)

The band blasted the audience with their hits and each song hypnotized the audience with its uniqueness.  At one point, Gustavo Santaolalla stops between songs and says.. "I'm very happy to be here and happy that you came to our show.  We've been together a few years but still don't know what musical genre we fit into or what to call our music.  Still I hope you enjoy it..."  This seemed to sum up the whole concert.. we didn't need genres or definitive styles.. just good traditional sounds mixed in with contemporary beats that make you want to jump up and dance.  On the last song before the encore the stage was filled with fans dancing to the sound of the music and ended in a feeling of complete appreciation for what BajoFondo brought to the DC area.  We couldn't have asked for more!

Check out the pictures in the KestaDC Gallery!  See you at the next show!

BajoFondo brings its Electro-Tango-TripHop Goodness to the 9:30

BajoFondo, or as they prefer to be called, "A collective of composers, singers and artists", has an A-list line-up for their latest album "Mar Dulce" and the steam to back it up. Bajofondo is comprised of Argentinian-Uruguayan stars Gustavo Santaolalla (guitar, vocals, percussion), Juan Campodónico (programming, beats, samples, guitar), Luciano Supervielle (piano, keyboards, scratching), Javier Casalla (violin), Martín Ferrés (bandoneon), Gabriel Casacuberta (upright bass, electric bass), Adrián Sosa (drums), and Verónica Loza (VJ, vocals).

You may recognize Argentinian Gustavo Santaolalla, a nine time latin grammy winner, and three time grammy winner, (Yes you read correctly, he's won the latin grammy 9 times!). A list of some of his work tells you its no wonder he hasn't won it 10 or 12 times having produced music for movies such as,"The Motorcycle Diaries", "Babel", "Brokeback Mountain", and "Amores Perros" as well as, produced albums for latin alternative artists Cafetacuba, Juanes, Julieta Venegas, Molotov, Bersuit, Prisioneros, Fobia (and an endless list of artists). Santaolalla also has a couple of Academy Awards and a Golden Globe tucked away in his arsenal of awards, his musical genius is no fluke!

"Mar Dulce", Bajofondos latest production is a mix of tango/electronica/trip-hop and latin fusion that has an appropiately all-star cast of artists performing on several songs. Guests include: Elvis Costello, Nelly Furtado, Julieta Venegas, Gustavo Cerati, Ryota Komatsu, La Mala Rodriguez, Santullo, Juan Subira (of Bersuit) and the final recorded performance by legendary Uruguayan tango diva Lagrima Rios.

"El Mareo" featuring Gustavo Cerati (Soda Stereo's vocalist) is the ultimate chill-out and relax song.  Not interested yet? Check out "Mar Dulce" on Itunes and I dare you not to be moved by the rhythmic tango-electronica coupled with latin rock/pop singer Julieta Venegas' voice on "Pa'Bailar- Siempre Quiero Mas". I dare you!!!!

Bajofondo performs LIVE this Saturday, April 11, 2009 at the legendary 9:30 club. Tickets are $25 at the door. See you there!

Los Fabulosos Cadillacs.NYC

After a six year layoff and with only four reunion performances in the continental United States, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs hit their second U.S. stop in Hammerstein Ballroom, NY. A sold out show with ticket prices doubled on craigslist at $100+ each and even quadrupled in some listings, the show was high demand and the fans eager. A capacity crowd at 2500 people (9:30 Club holds 1200 for comparison), as you walked past the long line of devoted fans waiting to enter you could still overhear the occasional frantic voice asking, "Where can I buy tickets?!?" I'd be lying if I said I didn't think about offering mine for 4x face value and using the profit to drink myself sexy. Fortunately for me I was dead set on catching this show.

Fast forward to 9pm as the lights go out and Los Fabulosos take the floor. Their opening song? I wouldn't know as I was fighting my way up to the stage to deliver a bag of extra camera lenses (thanks to everyone who made way). The set list probably looked something like this though (encores included):

3. carmela
4. cstoy harto de verte con otros
5. el genio del dub
6. wake up and make love with me
7. muy muy temprano
8. el aguijón
9. paquito
10. padre nuestro
11. saco azul
12. siguiendo la luna
13. los condenaditos
14. demasiada presión
15. v centenario
16. la luz del ritmo
17. calaveras y diablitos
18. gitana
19. carnaval toda la vida
20. malbicho
21. el satanico dr cadillac
22. basta de llamarme asi
23. vasos vacíos
24. vos sabés
25. el matador
26. guns of brixton
27. let's lynch the land lord
28. yo no me sentaria en tu mesa

Regardless of what tempo the show started with, the crowds energy never let up. Mosh pits formed at random as shirts quickly soaked and faces beaded with sweat. Where was I? Off on the side protected by a railing and snapping pictures. Being my first Fabulosos concert, I finally decided I needed to soak everything up, so over the railing I went. Several songs and countless elbows to the face later, I'm embraced with strangers singing songs I don't even know the lyrics to. A man to my right takes off his shirt, kisses it and throws it on stage. Vicentico acknowledges the shirt and croons on. Well into their first encore, someone else in front of me drops to his knees in tears and throws his hands in the air as if reaching for a lifeline in the songs lyrics. You couldn't deny the power of this band.

Although I'm admittedly not a true follower of the Cadillacs (I couldn't name five of their songs before this show), I did have a link. Like most people back in the mid 90's I had El Matador blasting on my Walkman. Who were these guys? No idea, the cassette wasn't even mine. It wasn't until years later when my parents were playing the song that I asked who it was. Los Fabulosos Cadillacs. My family actually made some money with the band, selling their albums at our record store, Sonido Latino in Herndon, VA (shameless plug). Yes, my family's business is music and I didn't really know who the Cadillacs were. I'll make it up to anyone and let you buy me a shot. Really! Now looking back I would've never imagined myself in 2009 in NYC singing my lungs out to this song live.

Alas, two encore performances later and just like that a memorable moment is over, but the movement far from. Along with the reunion tour, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs have released a new album, "La Luz Del Ritmo," a collection of new songs, refreshed older hits, and covers of songs from the Clash and Ian Dury. Regarding the unique assortment of tracks for a comeback album, Vicentico explains, "We were rehearsing for the upcoming tour, playing the old songs. The album reflects just that...our desire to play together after such a long time. We recorded the songs and let the album be. I guess we didn't have the time to get all serious about it and ruin the whole thing." Apparently the band had so much fun playing together again that they recorded enough for a 2nd new album. 20 tracks worth to be exact. Release date TBD.

As I'm sitting here downloading some Cadillacs, I can't help but smirk at the fact that even in music one is sometimes forced to flip through the past to catch up with the present and relate in the future. On a side note, one interesting thing that surprised me over the weekend was how many people were from this area. Being that the total population of DC, MD, and VA (~13mil) doesn't amount to NY (~19mil) and they have a higher percentage of Latinos at 16.2%, one would think out-of-towners would be few and far between. Not so! Represent!
